Moving hygiene science forward

The Hygiene Centre produces knowledge about how to effect large-scale improvements in hygiene behaviour, resulting in significant global health benefits.

We make our knowledge and expertise widely available. An important avenue of dissemination for lessons learned is academic publishing.

Training, teaching and supervision of students by Hygiene Centre staff, provide another effective information conduit. Public lectures and debate are used to inform a wider audience of ongoing developments in research.

Supervision, fieldwork-based research and projects overseas, provide a particularly rich and satisfying training experience for students.

Masters and Diploma Courses

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine offers a wide range of Masters' degrees, a number of which are relevant to students with interests in hygiene, sanitation and water. Staff at the Hygiene Centre are responsible for several courses run as part of the degree and diploma programmes, including Tropical Environmental Health, Designing Disease Control programmes in Developing Countries, and Health Promotion. Hygiene Centre staff also act as academic tutors for MSc students, and supervise student summer research projects in this general area. (See the Supervision section below for the names of potential supervisors.)

Research Degrees

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine offers three research degrees, the Doctor of Public Heath (DrPH), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

Staff at the Hygiene Centre are able to supervise the training of research students from the UK and overseas. See the Supervision section below for the names of potential supervisors and their areas of interest.

Funding for some degrees may be possible through existing Hygiene Centre projects. Also check for London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine studentships in the area.

'Expand Your Mind' Seminars

The Hygiene Centre meets weekly to discuss recent papers, field work results and emerging issues in the hygiene domain, often with visiting experts. Expand Your Mind (EYM) sessions are open to students and staff of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (and more generally, on request), and take place on Wednesdaysfrom 3:30pm. For more information, contact Robert Aunger.
